Encinitas Council supports mayor’s resolution to support state’s voting rights
Encinitas City Council members unanimously agreed to support Mayor Catherine Blakespear’s request Wednesday, October 19, to support Proposition 1, a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to guarantee a woman’s right to have a child. Abortion and contraception.
Blakespear, a Democrat running against Republican Matt Gunderson in the 38th Senate District, said she put the item on the council’s agenda because she passionately supports a woman’s right to make “fundamental decisions” and about her life. She said she thinks the city’s elected officials should weigh in on the issue now, given the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in June that overturned Roe v. Wade promoted almost 50 years of legal protection of abortion rights.
However, nearly all of the two dozen people who spoke during public comment on the item said they were against the ballot measure and believed Blakespear’s request was simply political. They argued that she had no business asking the council to weigh in on a moral issue, saying it had absolutely nothing to do with the city’s normal business.
Reverend James Bahash, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Encinitas, said that Blakespear was an “unnecessary division” and is actively working on the wishes of thousands of city residents. Calling Proposition 1 “an attack on the sanctity of life,” Bahash said Blakespear forced council members to take a stand on the controversial ballot measure.
Blakespear countered that the council often weighs ethical issues — everything from homelessness to raising the Pride flag — and said other Northwestern cities are also debating their position on the ballot measure.
None of the four council members said they had any issues with Blakespear’s request.
“Really, this is one of those things where it’s time to stand up,” said council member Tony Kranz, who was baptized as a Catholic and says he now considers himself a “dead Catholic.”
Kranz said one of the main reasons he doesn’t consider himself a practicing Catholic is the church’s position on abortion, which he says even many active church members don’t support. Many Catholics, including President Biden, support a woman’s right to choose whether or not to give birth, Kranz said. His comments drew applause from the audience and one person exclaimed, “He killed someone.”
It was clear on Wednesday, October 19, that the topic was “very charged” as a personal matter, Rep. Kellie Hinze said, adding, “That’s one of the reasons I support the right to vote.”
Hinze added that she just gave birth to a daughter this summer and is concerned that the Supreme Court ruling leaves her daughter with “less freedom and less rights than her grandmother.”
Councilor Joy Lyndes said she had recently been on the march for women’s rights and thought the government should not make personal decisions for women.
Also, Councilman Joe Mosca said he was proud of the council’s stance on the issue, saying he thought they were “on the right side of history.” Members of the House need to take a stand in light of the recent Supreme Court decision, he said. For years, many people have said that Roe v. Wade will never be overturned, and that has given people a false sense of security, he added.
