Music commissioned by Art of Elan will finally premiere in Encinitas after the postponement of the pandemic
The Art of Élan returns to North County later this month with the “Kontras Quartet & amp; Friends ”, which will be presented outdoors at the Institute of Contemporary Art North.
The Chicago-based Kontras Quartet, selected in 2018 as the Art of Élan residency ensemble, has suspended its residency due to a pandemic. They return to the region at 7.30 pm. April 21 for the show – with a world premiere that has been postponed for nearly two years, along with a multimedia show honoring the culture of surfing – at ICA North in Encinitas.
The upcoming program includes music by contemporary composers such as Caroline Shaw, Jessie Montgomery, Javier Alvarez and Nathalie Joachim, and the premiere of the string quartet “Hidden Mothers”.
Originally scheduled for May 2020, the song, commissioned by Art of Élan from Boston’s Steven Snowden, reflects the invisible sacrifices mothers make on a regular basis.
Among the limitations of last April’s pandemic, the Art of Élan presented a concert in the ICA North Garden in the Education Pavilion.
“It was a very memorable evening and our audience wants to return to this magical space,” said artistic director Kate Hatmaker.
