Longtime North County firefighter named chief fire chief for Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar
A new chief was hired to lead the Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar fire departments. One who says he will prioritize building relationships within the communities he serves and will focus on the mental health of firefighters and other emergency responders.
The city on Wednesday selected Deputy Chief Josh Gordon as the newest chief of the Encinitas Fire and Marine Safety Division, the Solana Beach Fire Department and the Del Mar Fire Department.
Gordon takes over Chief Mike Stein, who resigned in November. Stein had headed the three departments since 2015.
Gordon has served on the Encinitas fire department for more than a decade, city officials said Friday. He has held every rank in the department at least once – firefighter, engineer, captain, battalion commander, and most recently deputy chief.
The new fire chief said he looks forward to working with community members and stakeholders and addressing their concerns in the coming months.
“The fire department is made up of brave, brave people who are doing whatever it takes to keep our communities safe and secure,” he said in a City of Encinitas press release. “I am committed to building on this legacy of excellence.”
Responding to questions from the Union-Tribune via email, Gordon said he was working on a plan that would outline his goals for the department’s service, leadership and communications over the next 100 days.
Regarding the decision to select Gordon, Encinita’s City Manager Pamela Antil said the city is pleased that someone with deep connections to the community has filled the role.
Gordon grew up in Encinitas and graduated from La Costa Canyon High School. In 2010, he joined the fire department in his hometown.
“I am confident in his ability to advance our fire service as well as his long-term commitment to the job,” Antil said in the press release.
Gordon told the Union-Tribune that his main concerns are managing the budget effectively and improving communication within departments both internally and externally.
“Our goal is to ensure competent emergency response is provided at all levels of the communities we serve,” Gordon said. “Creating and nurturing internal and external relationships within the community to provide education and receive feedback is paramount to our success as public servants. We look forward to building those relationships.”
He also encouraged firefighters, lifeguards and prevention workers to acknowledge the emotional trauma they have endured over years and use the resources made available to them to improve their physical and mental health.
“More detailed medical screenings/physical examinations have already been conducted,” he said. “The next priority is to use mental health professionals to equip fire and ship safety personnel with the tools and techniques needed to help them become and stay mentally strong and healthy.”
