ENCINITAS, Calif. – A 40-year-old woman was rescued Tuesday on J Street Viewpoint after descending a closed cliff.

Encinitas firefighters received a call from a person walking on the beach and said they saw a woman trapped on the cliff.

“We have sent two lifeguards,” said Josh Gordon, acting deputy chief of the Encinitas Fire Department. “They were able to secure the victim in 20 minutes and then we took about an hour to recover her.”

SkyFOX captured the rescue, showing the woman with a rope with the lifeguards. According to Gordon, the rescue took longer because the woman was anxious to get back on the rescue ropes.

While these cliffs look stable, Gordon says they could be dangerous to go down.

“I think the cliff is stable, but once you start going down a steep slope or downhill on this issue, you will have foot problems and danger of falling if you are on the cliff,” he said.

Neither the woman nor the firefighters were injured during the rescue. Gordon said she was not charged or fined for the rescue, as Encinitas does not charge or fine people for being rescued.

“If you can read the signs, follow what they say,” Gordon said. “Stay in a safe place. We’ll appreciate it, too.”
