Find rare, unique vegetables at the Plant Vault in Encinitas

The perfect plant can be a representation, it can add warmth to a home, character to a room and even lift your mood. For Karl Heineman, owner of Plant Vault, his passion for plants led to a whole new successful and rewarding business venture: “The day-to-day work is so much fun.”

Newly opened in Encinitas, Plant Vault specializes in the rare and beautiful. Heineman runs her business from a gorgeous greenery-filled space in her home—the luxurious showroom currently stocks 80 varieties of rare and unique plants, such as monsteras, anthuriums, alocasias, philodendrons, and succulents, to accommodate plant lovers of all skill levels. with the plant of your dreams.

“We sell rare plants at the most affordable prices you’ll find anywhere,” Heineman said. In the incubator space, they also grow their Vault specimens of plants such as Philodendron White Princess, Knights and Wizards and Billietiae, which are considered collectors’ items, coveted for their long dormancy and orange stems.

Originally from Los Angeles, Heineman has a background in marketing and public relations. For 12 years, she represented all fashion trends and events at the California Market Center, downtown LA’s fashion hub. A resident of Encinitas for five years, she is the mother of two girls: Simone, a volleyball standout at San Dieguito Academy, and Collette, a student at Diegueno High School who helps out at Vault, misting plants and learning about business management.

Heineman’s interest in plants grew during the pandemic shutdown.

“I have plants like many others,” he said. “It was completely overwhelming, I just became obsessed.”

In an effort to fill her home and garden with plants, she frequented garden centers and big box stores, only to find that all the plants were the same, nothing unique. Finally, she turned to rare plant sellers on Etsy.

While researching, he discovered that Encinitas had a large plant community and contacted them to find out what they were interested in. He looked for plants to sell, and every week his shelves were empty as people snapped up the items he found. .

Plant Vault now has a large selection of rare plants, working with wholesalers in Indonesia, Colombia and Ecuador. With the help of his tissue culture expert Andre Caminite, they also grow their plants in the Vault’s incubator and on-site greenhouse.

“When I met Karl, I knew this was the best place for me,” said Caminite, a plant lover who works with plant manager Ava Tribe.

Since Plant Vault’s soft opening in July, Heineman has 500 followers on Instagram. People can order plants online or come into the showroom to see what’s on the shelves.

Currently on the shelves are variegated ZZs, the highly sought after Dark Lords with their large dark green leaves and Pictim Tricolor with their almost camouflaged looking foliage.

“Everybody likes something different, but the classic rare plant is the Monstera Thai star. People love it, it’s easy to care for, and it looks so different,” Heineman said of the stunning plant with its large variegated leaves.

Heineman said he would eventually like to see the company become a true lifestyle company, already selling plant-inspired clothing, bags, jewelry, artwork and stickers. Next summer, she plans to organize an avant-garde fashion show that combines plants and clothing.

First up, Plant Vault is hosting a gothic plant-focused Halloween plant party on Saturday, October 1st from 3-6 p.m.

The event helps people get amped up for the holidays with Halloween-inspired plants and accessories — one planter says “Feed Me Seymour,” a nod to the monster plant in “Little Shop of Horrors.” The plants for sale may not be rare, but unique, such as Venus Flytraps, red-stemmed Bloody Mary, Ric Rac with zigzag leaves, and Mimosa, a sensitive plant whose leaves curl when you touch it.

The event will include a planting station where you can make your own Halloween decorations, games, prizes, food and drinks, and the first 25 people in attendance will receive a free plant. Please email info@plantvault.com.

The showroom is open by appointment only. For more information, check out Plant Vault online at plantvault.com or follow them on Instagram @Plant_Vault
