Encinitas to explore ways to improve the look of the roundabout

The Encinitas City Council agreed on Oct. 12 to form a subcommittee consisting of council members Tony Kranz and Joy Lyndes to explore ways to make a so-called “quickly built” roundabout more attractive.

Encinitas installed the detachable roundabout, which consists of rubber wheel stoppers and flexible plastic poles called bollards, as a low-cost pilot to solve traffic problems at the Y-shaped intersection of Eolus Avenue, Andrew Avenue and Hillcrest Drive in October 2021.

Recent city traffic studies show it has performed well at its assigned task – speeds approaching the intersection are now in the 24 to 28 mph range – but neighbors complain that the fluorescent plastic bollards marking vehicle paths are unsightly are, city officials said.

Council members said they liked the affordable nature of the “quick-build” roundabout and wanted to encourage its installation in other parts of the city. They found that the installation costs only about $15,000, while a traditional concrete roundabout with landscaping and drainage systems can be a multi-million dollar project.

Lyndes, a landscape architect, said there could be an inexpensive but decorative solution to improve the look.
