Encinitas Group, residents share concerns about the Torrey Crest project

ENCINITAS – A growing number of residents express concern over a proposed residential development project in South Cardiff that critics say lacks adequate environmental safeguards, poor infrastructure design and potential human health hazards .

Hundreds of concerned residents gathered at a briefing on April 30 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church organized by the Melba Alliance for a Safe and Healthy Environment, or MASHE.

During the event, presenters raised a number of concerns with the Torrey Crest project, a 30-lot development proposal on a 7-acre plot between Melba Road and Oak Crest Middle School.

The project proposal, presented by developer Torrey Pacific Corporation, is being reviewed by city officials and may reach approval from Encinitas City Council later this year, according to Brian Staver, Torrey Pacific’s manager. The most recent presentation of the developer in the city is the third proposal for the project since January 2021.

However, for some Encinitas residents living next to the proposed project site, including those meeting over the weekend, the proposal, as it currently stands, prioritizes convenience and cost reduction measures over environmental awareness and poses potential threats to both ecological systems and human housing.
