A community-wide anti-trafficking conference called “Stop Being a ‘Good Girl'” is scheduled for noon to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive, and via Zoom.
In recognition of the United Nations Day of the Girl, the conference will discuss global trends in human trafficking, online crime and internationally recognized human rights. The conference will include presentations by speakers from internationally recognized organizations and raising awareness of human trafficking from various international perspectives.
The Chair of the San Diego Regional Advisory Council on Human Trafficking and Commercial Child Sexual Exploitation will deliver the opening remarks. Organizations participating in the fight against human trafficking include the community health centers of La Maestra; Human Trafficking Program, which provides services to victims of human trafficking in San Diego; DeliverFund, which deals with human trafficking using state-of-the-art technology; and Oasis India, which works in India to create inclusive communities for the holistic treatment of community members to prevent human trafficking.
The conference includes a book signing and debut reading of Puja Shah’s novel “For My Sister” beginning at 5:30 p.m. October 23. The story is about twin sisters, Amla and Asya, who are “trafficked into the taboo world of India’s largest red light district”. The book is based on Shah’s experience growing up in Indian culture, her volunteer work with underserved women and children in Africa and India, and her work interviewing nonprofit organizations that serve victims of human trafficking and child marriage.
Book purchases are available throughout the conference. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to non-profit organizations that serve victims of human trafficking, and attendees who purchase “For My Sister” at the conference will receive a free jewelry gift from Project: Yourself.
The conference is a collaboration between Encinitas-based non-profit Shah Education and Exploration Foundation, San Diego-based BRAV Consultations and My Sisters Secrets, also based in San Diego.
Tickets are $10, with a portion of the proceeds going to the presenting organizations.
