Encinitas adjusts to the growing cyclist population when the Cyclovia event returns

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) – The city of Encinitas has blocked off six city blocks to encourage residents to ride bikes or walk. It was part of their “Cyclovia” episode that comes back from this pandemic.

An empty Highway 101 means it’s the perfect time to ride a wheelie, or go for a walk.

“Scooters, skateboards, bikes, bikes, anything that moves you, except for a car today,” said Nick Buck, Director of Special Events and Projects at Encinitas.

No vehicles are allowed from D to J Street. Instead, the San Diego Mountain Bike Association, in partnership with Sprockids SD, has installed trails for kids to ride bikes. The city also had booths set up to offer free bike checks and talk about bike safety.

“It’s also good to educate people about e-bikes, because there are a lot of bike problems and safety challenges,” said Encinitas resident Chris Colyer.

In this coastal city, e-bikes are becoming a popular way to get around.

“I love it,” said Encinitas resident Stevie Coury. I usually take a morning cruise on weekends. Grab a coffee, cruise the city, watch the waves. ”

That’s why the city is shifting gears to become more bike-friendly. Sunday’s incident is one example of this, and so is the latest street project in Leucadia.

Tony Kranz, mayor of Encinitas, said: “It created a new bike path, a roundabout, and improved pedestrian paths.”

Cyclists say improvements are still needed.

Paul Brice, a resident of Encinitas, said: “Some roads feel unsafe especially when the bike lane is narrow.

But with the new mayor cycling around town, they’re hoping for more road safety.
