Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in Encinitas identified as Canyon Crest alum

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Encinitas early Sunday, Jan. 1, sheriff’s officials said. Friends identified the slain young man as David D’Lima, a 23-year-old graduate of Canyon Crest Academy.

Sheriff’s deputies and Encinitas Fire Department personnel responded to the scene of the crash at Encinitas Boulevard and Coast Highway 101 shortly before 12:30 p.m., Sgt. Jeremy Collis said.

“The vehicle was westbound on Encinitas Boulevard approaching Coastal Highway 101 when the male was walking northbound and crossed Encinitas Boulevard,” Collis said. “The vehicle struck the man and then continued westbound on West B Street and fled the area.”

D’Lima suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where he died.

“David was an intelligent, responsible, kind, compassionate and loving man and friend,” read a post on a Go Fund Me account set up to support David’s family. “He always knew how to make everyone smile and his smile encouraged many.”

At Canyon Crest Academy, he excelled in basketball, academics and “brought endless joy to our high school community,” according to the website. After high school, D’Lima attended UC Santa Barbara and earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science

“His loving soul touched everyone in his path,” the website said.

The vehicle was described as a dark sedan or van, possibly a Chrysler or Dodge, with damage to the front driver’s side, said Sgt.

The sheriff’s traffic division led the investigation. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call (760) 966-3500 or the sheriff’s department at (858) 565-5200.
