Encinitas to explore ways to improve the appearance of a roundabout
The Encinitas City Council agreed last week to form a subcommittee consisting of council members Tony Kranz and Joy Lyndes to explore ways to make what is being called a “rapid build” of the roundabout more attractive.
Encinitas installed a moving roundabout, consisting of rubber wheel stops and flexible plastic posts known as bollards, as a low-cost pilot project to address traffic issues at the Y-shaped intersection of Eolus Avenue, Andrew Avenue and Hillcrest Drive in October 2021.
Recent city traffic studies show it has done its job well — speeds approaching the intersection are now in the 24-28 mph range — but neighbors complain that the fluorescent plastic poles that mark vehicle lanes are unsightly, city officials said.
Council members said they liked the affordable nature of the “quick build” roundabout and wanted to encourage its installation in other parts of the city. They noted that the installation only cost about $15,000, while a traditional concrete roundabout with landscaping and drainage systems can be a multi-million dollar project.
Lyndes, a landscape architect, said there could be an inexpensive but decorative solution to improve its appearance.
