The San Dieguito Union High School district is seeking a partner to fund a pool that could be used by both district students and the community, a district official told city council Wednesday.
“If there is interest, I would return to my advice in January 2023” and begin the process of reworking the pool plans and updating cost estimates, added John Addleman, interim district superintendent for business services.
All five city council members said they were keenly interested in the idea of Encinitas partnering with the school district on a swimming pool project, but warned that the process of moving from idea to reality may have to go through some rough waters.
“There’s no doubt it’s worth exploring,” council member Tony Kranz told Addleman, adding that he needed to remember the famous saying that “the devil is in the details.”
Both council member Kellie Hinze and Mayor Catherine Blakespear said they think residents would like to have a community pool. Hinze noted that the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA is the community’s primary source for swimming lessons and that, due to the city’s growth, greater access to the pool is needed. Council member Joy Lyndes said she couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
“I think there is interest in the community, but these are not easy things to do,” he said.
Among the problems to be solved is where the pool will be located and how big it will be.
The San Dieguito Union High School district, which covers a large area from Carmel Valley to southern Carlsbad, is considering two swimming pool projects, Addleman said. The district council has supported the creation of a swimming pool at Torrey Pines High School and a second swimming pool “somewhere here at the north end of the district,” he said.
During his presentation, he showed a slide using the San Dieguito sports complex on Calle Barcelona south of Carlsbad as the second proposed pool site. If that pool were a shared facility with both school and community use, the district would propose building a 50-meter pool, he said, adding that such a project is estimated to cost $ 16.3 million to build and about $ 1. million dollars a year for operation depending on how it is managed.
Carlsbad has a communal pool, the Monroe Street Pool, next to Carlsbad High School, as well as a city pool complex at Alga Norte Park. Encinitas does not have a communally owned swimming pool.
As Addleman talked about creating a swimming pool at the southern Carlsbad site, members of the Encinitas city council talked about how the original plans for Encinitas Community Park, which opened in 2015, included a swimming pool. Kranz noted that the swimming pool project was included in the environmental impact report the state approved for the park project and said the city should look into how big it is proposed to be.
Board member Joe Mosca, who previously served on the city’s parks and recreation committee, said it was interesting to hear the pool issue.
“The circle is complete that we are now discussing it again,” he said, adding later: “I am absolutely in favor of exploring it further.”
Addleman told the council that the district is saving $ 38 million for its pool projects. The Torrey Pines High School project, which is expected to be a 37-meter pool, is expected to cost $ 14 million to build and just under $ 250,000 a year to operate, he said.
