Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear will deliver her final State of the City address Thursday night during a festive event at the Alila Marea Beach Resort.
Blakespear, who is running for the state Senate after three terms as mayor, said Monday that his speech would focus on the city’s ability to address “the challenges that face every city — homelessness and mental illness, adapt to climate change, drought, fires, lack of housing affordability and aging infrastructure.”
“We are ready for the future and ready to lead,” he wrote in a text to a reporter.
Recent city accomplishments that Blakespear said he plans to highlight include the opening of the El Portal railroad crossing and the ongoing Streetscape project that is transforming the Leucadia portion of Coast Highway 101.
A project that is expected to move forward soon — the renovation of the former Pacific View School property into a city arts center — will also be featured, he added.
Thursday’s State of the City event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception where businesses can network and taste food samples from 13 local restaurants, or nearly double the number of restaurants that participated last year, said Carol Knight, director of community relations for the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce .
The formal program begins at 7 p.m. David DaCosta, the chamber’s board president, will be master of ceremonies, and the leaders of the three city organizations 101 Main Street, representing downtown, Cardiff and Leucadia, will all speak before the mayor gives his address. His address is scheduled to begin at 7:30, Knight said.
This is the second year that the event will be held at Alila Marea Resort and it is also the second State of the City event that the chamber has hosted since the beginning of the pandemic. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased on the chamber’s website at: https://local.encinitaschamber.com/events/details/2022-state-of-the-city-9952 There is also a fee of $13 parking, but organizers are encouraging people to carpool.
The camera is on the “home road” to sell the event. Most of the 200 tickets are sold, but a few are still available, Knight said.
And, for those who can’t attend, this year’s event will be streamed live on the city’s website just like last year.
