REGION — The City of Encinitas is the latest municipality to switch to community energy of choice as part of the ongoing rollout of San Diego Community Power services across San Diego County.
San Diego Community Power, which includes the cities of San Diego, Encinitas, La Mesa, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, began service in February and will continue to expand its services to member counties over the next two months. San Diego Community Power offers two tiers – “Power On”, which is the standard tier that provides 50% renewable energy plus 5% greenhouse gas-free electricity, and “Power100”, which is billed as 100% renewable and 100% carbon free.
Carnahan said residents will save between 1% and 1.5% on their bill compared to SDG&E, although they provide more renewable energy than SDG&E through its two product offerings.
“We are aware of the fact that we need to be competitive,” said Carnahan. “Our goal is to be at or below the SDG&E level. Frankly, fees are a moving target. Our goal is to have a tariff readjustment once a year, where they can have two or three.”
San Diego Community Power also has multiple contracts with SDG&E, its parent company Sempra and Royal Dutch Shell. In addition, many of its renewable contracts for wind, geothermal and solar installations are in California, Pacific Northwest, Canada and Mexicali, Mexico.
