Lighting Skate to hold annual event in Encinitas
A local non-profit organization that supports the inclusion of women and transgender people in skateboarding will hold its first live event since 2019.
The organization, Exposure Skate, holds the event each year to showcase around 200 female, trans and non-binary skateboarders at various stages of their careers. Due to the pandemic, in 2020 and 2021, he partnered with Thrasher Magazine for a video contest that attracted more than 200 entries from around the world in 2020 and 2021.
This year, Exposure’s namesake event will take place October 22-23 in Encinitas.
Exposure Skate was co-founded by professional skateboarder Amelia Brodka, who represented Poland at the 2020 Olympics. Brodka’s own journey began when she was a child in New Jersey and the X Games were in Philadelphia.
“We were just walking around and somewhere in the corner we saw one of the vert ramps slide,” she said. “When we got closer, we saw that they were women and girls and they were doing a demo. At the time, I had never seen a skateboard by a man, and it totally inspired me and opened my mind to the possibility that maybe one day I would be able to skate on giant ramps as well. That’s what got me on that journey of wanting to skateboard and being totally obsessed with it.”
Her rise as a skater was complicated by obstacles that disproportionately affected women in skating, such as the cancellation of events and difficulties in obtaining sponsorships.
But a lot has changed over the years.
“There’s a lot more visibility in terms of non-male skaters getting featured in magazines and sponsorships and all these things,” Brodka said.
She continued: “Girls skating today have been around it, they’ve been exposed to it at a young age and obviously it seems like it’s something they can participate in. So we have already seen a lot of changes that we wanted to see. Because in the beginning I was always the only girl I knew when I started skating, and it was definitely a lot harder for me to be a part of the sport because it was always a boys’ club.”
Professional figure skater and Olympian Bryce Wettstein, who is from Encinitas, is one of the best success stories to come out of the Exposure event. She attended the first one at the age of 7.
“We really helped create a competitive avenue for it when it wasn’t there,” Brodka said.
