Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear leads herd in race for state Senate District 38

Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear and small business owner Matt Gunderson are likely to go to the general election in November for Senate District 38 in a race between the progressive Democratic Party and the anti -Republican -tax.

The first return on Tuesday night showed Blakespear ahead of Gunderson and fellow Democrat Joe Kerr, with 47 percent of the vote compared to 42 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

The three candidates competed Tuesday in the race for the county, which runs from southern Orange County through Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista, south to Carmel Valley, La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach.

On the roadmap, Blakespear has demonstrated its environmental evidence, which includes the use of an Encinitas construction law to limit the use of natural gas in new construction, installation of new protected roadways and supporting a San Diego Gas & amp; Electrical test, called San Diego Community Power. It also supports efforts to address heavy housing costs by building shelters, withholding illegal holiday rentals and quickly checking the approval of residential areas.

Gunderson has called for the rebuilding of more reservoirs to deal with droughts, freezing fuel taxes to give drivers relief from rising gas prices and imposing harsher penalties for crimes including guns. He is opposed to enforcement laws to control guns and Gov. Gavin Newsom is dealing with the disease.

The other three Senate races in San Diego County, involving only two candidates, will automatically advance to the general election on Nov. 8.

In District 18 – covering parts of downtown San Diego, South Bay county, including National City, Imperial Beach and Otay Mesa, as well as parts of Imperial, San Bernardino and Riverside counties – Chula Vista City Councilor and California Coastal Commission MP Steve Padilla, a Democrat, will face Republican Alejandro Galicia, a Navy veteran.

In District 32 – which includes central San Diego County and parts of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties – Democrat Brian Nash, an analyst adviser, challenged Republican State Assemblyman Kelly Seyarto.

In District 40 – which includes Escondido, Poway, Santee, the Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo counties of San Diego, Descanso, Lakeside and Ramona – Republican state Sen. Brian Jones is running against Democrat Joseph Rocha, a lawyer and veteran of the Navy and Marines.
