Encinitas council candidate forums begin this week

There are a variety of options when it comes to watching the Encinitas City Council and mayoral candidates debate during this election season.

From 3 October, municipal organizations from Cardiff, Olivenhain and Leucadia will host voter education events in a variety of formats.

Leucadia-Encinitas City Council is adhering to the Zoom online meeting format it first used two years ago at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Designed to allow people to gather in a health-safe way, the Zoom forum turned out to have an unexpected benefit, Councilwoman Kathleen Lees said on Friday.

As it was recorded, both the League of Women Voters of Northern San Diego County, which organized the event, and the individual candidates ended up with videos that they could then post on their websites, she said. The Leucadia organization is again partnering with the league so voters who cannot attend Zoom meetings can watch events on the league’s website or a candidate’s website.

Cardiff-by-the-Sea City Council is holding its candidate events – one for mayoral candidates and one for Cardiff district council candidates – in person, but questions must be submitted well in advance of each event. Meanwhile, the Olivenhain City Council is organizing a face-to-face event in its historic meeting hall that will feature candidates for mayor and councilors.

Cardiff City Council will host the first forum of the season. It’s at:

6 pm Monday, October 3, Ada Harris Elementary School Auditorium. He introduces the two candidates for the council’s District 3 – Councilwoman Joy Lyndes and community advocate Julie Thunder. The deadline for submitting questions to this forum has already passed.

The organization also has a second forum planned to:

6 pm, October 10, Ada Harris School. This one is for the four mayoral candidates – community volunteer Michael “Myekah” Blobe, small business entrepreneur Cindy Cremona, councilor Tony Kranz and community advocate Jeff Morris. The deadline to submit questions for this event is October 6th and people can send them to EncMayorQuestions@gmail.com

The in-person event of the Olivenhain City Council is scheduled for:

6:30-9:00 pm, Wednesday, October 5, at the Olivenhain Meeting Hall. It’s for the mayoral candidates, as well as the four candidates for the District 4 council seat – business owner Stacie Davis, technology executive Bruce Ehlers, educator/parent Pamela “Pam” Redela, and scientist/community volunteer. Dan Vaughn.

There are three online Encinitas forums moderated by the Northern San Diego County Voters’ League. They are set to:

Online events will begin with opening statements from each of the participating candidates. After the presentations, the moderator asks pre-submitted questions and each candidate will have the same amount of time to respond. Questions must be submitted 24 hours before the event. For instructions on how to submit questions and/or join the Zoom meeting, visit the league’s website at: https://my.lwv.org/california/north-county-san-diego.

People can also watch these forums through the league’s YouTube channel.
