For supporters of Mayor Catherine Blakespear, Tuesday night, November 29, was a bittersweet moment as the community wished her well in her new role as State Senator and thanked her for her service to Encinitas.
“Good luck as you head north, don’t forget about us,” said Marlon Taylor, a member of the city’s Equity Committee that Blakespear helped create.
Environmental lawyer Marco González, who has been involved in city legal affairs for 25 years, said the end of an era had come.
“I am proud to have been part of the Blakespear era,” he told the crowd of about 100 gathered at the recognition event at City Hall.
Blakespear was elected to the state Senate, representing District 38, earlier this month. She has been the mayor of Encinitas for three terms and prior to that was a city councilmember and traffic commissioner. “It truly is the honor of my life to serve as the mayor of Encinitas,” she said during a prepared speech at the start of the two-hour event.
After she spoke, her council colleagues talked about what it was like to work with her. Councilor Joe Mosca said his first meeting with Blakespear was the “beginning of a great partnership and friendship”, while Councilor Kellie Hinze, who recently gave birth to a daughter, praised Blakespear’s family-friendly policies.

Blakespear stressed that he could not have accomplished what he did without the support of his family, fellow council members and city employees. In the city’s 36-year history, it has had 19 mayors and 12 of them have been women, Blakespear said.
A former Encinitas councilwoman was unabashedly delighted that Blakespear was leaving her Encinitas post for the state Senate seat.
“While you lose it, I win it,” State Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath told the crowd.
Horvath said she is looking forward to having a local partner in state government to work with on North County issues, adding that she had “so many hopes and so many dreams” of what they could achieve together given Blakespear’s skills and knowledge. of Encinitas.
