Actor Bruce Turk is currently exhibiting art at the Civic Center Gallery, Encinitas City Hall, 505 Vulcan Ave., Encinitas. The only exhibition, “Archive,” will be on view until August 28th. Artist reception with live music and artist programming will take place on Saturday, July 23, 5: 30-8: 30 p.m. Admission is free. All works are sold.
Turk creates works of art using concealed materials such as old books, game manuscripts, and even the sets of plays. His recent work was created on handmade panels using wood picked up from the North Coast Repertory Theater production of The Return, in which he appeared. Pages from old books form the heart of his abstract work. “The first time I tore the pages of a book, it felt like sacrilege,” Turk says. “But I have come to understand that destruction can lead to creation and rebirth.” He regularly searches bookstores, bookstores and bookstores for vintage material. “I love the texture and patina of old pages. To me they are a palpable reminder of where we come from. They connect us to history. “
“Archive” chronicles the struggle to connect with others over the past two years. Thirty mixed media shows a shift from the pandemic’s deep retirement and tension to an open, more balanced mood. The most recent work evokes softening, acceptance and calm. “I hope it reflects what we all aspire to achieve,” Turk says.
Turkish is seen frequently in productions at North Coast Repertory Theater in Solana Beach, most recently Same Time Next Year, Ben Butler, and The Return. With credits including Broadway, Lincoln Center, Off-Broadway, and major regional theaters including the Old Globe in San Diego, Turk has also maintained a practice of visual arts for over 30 years. His art has appeared in law exhibitions at Art on the 30th in San Diego and numerous literary journals. It is held in private collections in San Diego, Seattle, and San Francisco.
