Recycled water addition for Encinitas

ENCINITAS — Olivenhain Municipal Water District began construction in the first week of August on a new recycled water pipe at Encinitas along Manchester Avenue and South El Camino Real from Via Poco to Tennis Club Drive.

Upon completion, customers connected to this new pipeline will irrigate with recycled water, which will reduce the demand for imported drinking water by more than 10 million gallons annually.

Recycled water is a sustainable water source that reduces the region’s dependence on imported water. OMWD currently meets around 14% of its total water needs using locally supplied recycled water for irrigation.

“Recycled water is an important tool in our efforts to diversify our water supply and reduce the impact of drought,” explains OMWD Board President Larry Watt. “By changing from drinking water to recycled water for irrigation, this project has become another example of how we can significantly reduce our drinking water consumption.”

The new pipeline is an element of the larger North San Diego County Regional Recycled Water Project—a collaborative effort among nine Northern County agencies coordinating across jurisdictional boundaries. The water OMWD will deliver via the new pipeline is produced at the San Elijo Joint Powers Authority water reclamation facility in Cardiff.

OMWD is aggressively seeking grant funding for this project to be cost-effective for taxpayers. The effort has been successful, with OMWD reaching $1.35 million from the California Department of Water Resources for two separate pipeline segments, and approximately $400,000 from the US Bureau of Reclamation Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse Program.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023 and progress updates can be found at olivenhain.com/projects and by following OMWD on Facebook and Twitter.
