The stone steps are closed at Stonesteps Beach in Encinitas

The city of Encinitas closed access to Stonesteps Beach on Wednesday due to damage to a stairway.

“The city’s structural engineer has deemed the main support beam for the upper deck and lower steps of Stonesteps to be structurally unsafe and should be replaced and closed,” the city said in a post on its website and Instagram.

“The condition of the main support was discovered during a post-storm inspection and was the result of continued exposure to moisture and coastal conditions,” Encinitas Parks, Recreation and Cultural Director Travis Karlen told KPBS via email.

A long accessible stairway was built at the southern end of El Portal in 1991. CaliforniaBeaches.com describes Stonesteps as “a local beach…that’s a little off the beaten path.” The website also describes the access steps as “a large concrete and stone staircase that descends a steep crumbling cliff to the narrow beach below.”

Karlen said there is currently no information on how long the stairwell will be closed.

The city advises people to visit Moonlight or Beacons beaches instead. Karlen said those sites are regularly monitored and “there have been no concerns.”
