Letters: Don’t Let the Arts Alive Banners Die in Encinitas
Something is missing – a 21 year old Encinitas tradition that I and many locals look forward to every year.
I’m referring to the beautiful Arts Alive banners that hang from the lampposts along Coast Highway 101.
All of these beautiful works of art were created by local artists, representing the large and growing community of artists that Encinitas has been blessed with.
At one time, there were 101 flags marking and beautifying our coastal highway.
This year, the number has been reduced to 22. Thanks in part to the dedication shown by 101 Artists Colony, Cardiff Seaside Market and the Surfing Madonna Foundation, this tradition has not died.
Now, this beautiful display has been reduced to the parking lot of the Seaside Market and a few lampposts of Cardiff’s Restaurant Row on the highway.
Fortunately, the quality of the art has not diminished along with the numbers. The amazing talent of our local artists has been shown again. Many and many of our artists were very disappointed that they could no longer participate in this good tradition.
Why is this bad thing happening? Good question. A big part of the problem is the disinterested city staff and the lack of interest from our City Government. A city permit required four months for the 22 flags — a permit, by the way, that was never required before.
Due to lack of maintenance, many of the hands displayed on the light poles are old and damaged. Despite numerous pleas to the council and city staff from 101 Artists Colony, the pleas for much-needed repairs have fallen on deaf ears.
Encinitas artists are not small or insignificant – they are one of the defining features of our city. The artistic community makes our city special, vibrant, and a true asset of San Diego County.
Please speak to the management and don’t let this wonderful tradition disappear.
“Medicine, law, business, engineering; they are honorable pursuits and necessary for sustaining life. But (laughs), poetry, beauty, love, love… these are the things we live for.” — John Keating, “Dead Poets Society”
